Ask these 3 questions before you turn to divorce

Posted by Ashlei Gradney | Nov 09, 2020 | 0 Comments

One of the most important things you can do as you start considering the possibility of a divorce is to really assess how you feel about your marriage. It's easy to make the statement that you want to leave when you're angry or upset, but it's still vital that you sit down and ask yourself real questions about how you feel and how you want to move forward.

Before you turn to divorce, you may want to ask:

  • If there is anything that you or your spouse could do to improve your marriage
  • If you have thought about the financial implications of a divorce
  • If you are prepared to move forward without your spouse

Once you start the divorce process, you can legally stop at any point. However, taking back the idea that you want to divorce is another matter entirely. If you tell your spouse that you want to divorce them, then that may be painful and damaging to your relationship.

Instead, consider thinking of ways to make your marriage better. Ask them if they will go to counseling or consider your wishes. Look at your finances and make sure you are able to survive without the other person's support and make sure that you see a future without your spouse in it.

Once you put the idea of divorce out there, taking it back isn't always easy. It's worth talking to your spouse about how you feel and that you're worried about your relationship before you make a major decision. If they don't address your concerns, then your attorney can help you decide how to move forward.
